Navigating the Bizarro World of the Christian Left, Pt. 1
Just like in the Bizarro World, Htrae, the Christian Left gets everything backwards
The Bizarro World Analogy
The DC Comics universe has an entertaining villain, Bizarro, who is basically a mirror image anti-hero to the hero par excellence, Superman. Bizarro’s Bizarro World is called Htrae, Earth spelled backwards. Bizarro society lives by the Bizarro Code: "Us do opposite of all Earthly things! Us hate beauty! Us love ugliness! Is big crime to make anything perfect on Bizarro World!" The Bizarro World article on Wikipedia explains:
“In one episode, for example, a salesman is doing a brisk trade selling Bizarro bonds: ‘Guaranteed to lose money for you’. Later, the mayor appoints Bizarro #1 to investigate a crime, ‘Because you are stupider than the entire Bizarro police force put together’. This is intended and taken as a great compliment.
Bizarro World is an oddly pertinent way to look at the present relationship between the Christian Right and the Christian Left in America. Both sides believe they are Superman while their counterparts tout beliefs straight out of Bizarro World. We’re pursuing the good, the true, and the beautiful but they hate beauty! They love ugliness!
This is an acceptable arrangement, because, of course, each side thinks they’re right. It is possible that both sides may be wrong to one degree or another on any particular topic, but, over the course of time, the truth will become evident for the movements as a whole. One side will more closely conform to the image of Christ, the veracity of Scripture, and the ways of God’s created order aka nature, and the other will more closely resemble Bizarro World. “Keep up bad work and some day you will be worst student on whole planet!!! What an honor!!!”
Applying the Bizarro Lens to Democracy
We could apply the Bizarro lens to any number of topics but let’s begin with “Democracy.”
One of the more bizarre moments of the 2024 presidential campaign in online evangelical circles was a Zoom call with the highly-astro turfed Bizarro World organization, Evangelicals for Harris. (As an aside, the now renamed organization has not made the video of the Zoom call available for some reason. You would think these evangelicals would be proud of their endorsement of Harris and would want the video to reach as wide an audience as possible).
The founder of Evangelicals for Harris, Jim Ball, was very worried about what a Trump presidency would mean for the future of his life’s mission, social justice work around the climate change hoax. Ball states, “I never wanted to engage in electoral politics. But I came to see that democracy and the rule of law were threatened. If those things are threatened, then my ability to do my nonpartisan climate work is also threatened.”
Fearmongering and the 2024 Election
The idea that democracy itself was threatened by another Trump presidency was a common theme of the left in 2024. One leftist author warned days before the election,
“With specific plans for autocratization already in place [referring to Project 2025], and a recent grant of criminal immunity from the Supreme Court, there’s every reason to treat a second Trump term as an extinction-level threat to American democracy.”
Examples of fearmongering over the extinction of democracy at the hands of Trump could be multiplied. What made all the cries so laughable was that all of these individuals were rallying around a candidate secretly hand-picked by Democrat Party insiders in defiance of the will of the voters who had already secured enough votes of the people through primaries and caucuses to secure the nomination for then-President Joe Biden.
The Left’s Redefinition of Democracy
Now that Donald Trump is in his second term, the left continues to demonstrate that “democracy” is simply a hollow term meaning whatever they need it to mean as they accumulate and exercise power. A common understanding of “democracy” ought to lead to acceptance of the fact that a duly elected President who won the popular vote as well as the electoral college along with victories in seven swing states may lawfully exercise the powers of the Chief Executive of the Executive Branch. This is certainly what the left demands when a Democrat is in office.
However, this is not the case. The left, instead, is deploying their Democrat-appointed district judges to continue their lawfare campaign by blocking the President’s executive actions at every turn. Their “by any means necessary” approach to politics has created an immense constitutional crisis.
The Climate Change Irony
Where is the founder of Evangelicals for Harris now? Ball claimed he was thrust into electoral politics after he “came to see that democracy and the rule of law were threatened.” And, if those things are threatened, then his ability to do his nonpartisan climate work was also threatened. In fact, the left has turned on a former hero of the climate change movement, Elon Musk.
Electric vehicles were once celebrated by the climate change hoaxers but, now that Musk has thrown in with the Big Hitler, the left has returned to its bread and butter: domestic terror. Just like the fiery but mostly peaceful protests that set city blocks aflame in the summer of 2020, democracy calls for the spray painting of swastikas and fire-bombing of Musk’s Teslas, many owned, ironically, by fellow climate change hoaxers.
As Bizarro might say, “Democracy am Bizarro’s best friend. Bizarro must be fascist!”
